Drum, pulley and belt-type: which is which
- Dry drum and pulley magnets sit on a belt conveyor. A pulley magnet takes the place of the conveyor head pulley, and a drum magnet is a magnetic roller in the material path. Iron is held to the belt past the discharge point and drops into a separate collection box, while clean material falls away normally. PTMS lists these in one-, two- and three-layer designs for granular materials.
- Belt-type magnetic separators use rare-earth magnetic rollers and a feed belt. Material enters the feed inlet, lands on the belt and is carried to the magnetic roller; iron sticks to the roller, is carried into the non-magnetic zone by the belt rotation, and drops automatically into the iron receiving box. No manual iron removal is needed.
Layers: one, two or three
The single-layer machine is the base case. Double-layer and multi-layer arrangements pass the material over more than one magnetic stage, which is how stubborn or higher iron loads are handled; they are made to customer requirements. Our catalogue includes a fully automatic 3-layer belt magnetic separator, a one-layer belt type, a two-layer dry pulley drum magnet, a three-layer belt-type pulley magnet and, in the permanent-magnet range, a DCMB double-layer belt magnet.
Where they fit
- Particle range: especially large granules from 0.1 × 0.1 mm to 10 × 10 mm, including 10–60 mesh material.
- Applications published: tailing or refining of fine-grained weakly magnetic minerals; non-metallic minerals such as feldspar, quartz, rutile, zircon and corundum; removing weakly magnetic impurities from abrasives and catalysts; and, for the permanent-magnet belt separator, ceramic dry powder, quartz sand, refractory material and plastic granules.
- Features published: large magnetic surface area, simple structure, no manual iron removal, low failure rate and more thorough iron removal.
The permanent-magnet belt separator uses a composite system of NdFeB and ferrite blocks, which gives a deep field that is not easily demagnetised, so the machine tolerates fluctuations in production.
Not for fine powders
Belt, drum and pulley magnets work on granules and coarser material. For fine, free-flowing powder use a dry electromagnetic powder separator; for pipeline and gravity-fed powders see permanent magnetic separators.
What to send for a quote
Conveyor models are customized (custom-built) to each project, so they have no fixed numeric specification; a datasheet per project (field strength, belt width, power) is issued on request. To size the right unit tell us: belt width and speed, material and bulk density, particle size, throughput, the iron to be removed (tramp or weakly magnetic) and how many layers you expect, plus your destination country.
Next step: send us your material details (or WhatsApp +86 139 2990 7491) and we reply with a matched model and a quotation. Our FAQ states that a test on a sample of your material comes first, and that no iron-reduction figure is quoted without a test.
