Ceramic slurry magnetic separator: iron removal from glaze, body and frit

Short answer: a ceramic magnetic separator pulls iron out of glaze, body slurry and frit before firing, so tile, sanitaryware and tableware come out without black iron specks. PTMS builds wet electromagnetic slurry separators configured to your slurry, dry electromagnetic models PT3A160, PT20A600, PT25A600 and PT1000 for dry powder, and custom-made permanent-magnet iron removers; a free 2–5 kg sample test comes first.

Why ceramic plants remove iron

Iron specks in glaze and body are the most visible quality defect in ceramic ware. They show up as black spots on glazed surfaces after firing, lower the first-quality yield for tile, sanitaryware and tableware, and bring rework and customer complaints. Removing the iron before firing is cheaper than rejecting the ware afterwards.

Slurry stage: wet electromagnetic separator

Glaze, body slurry and frit slurry are cleaned with a wet electromagnetic separator that runs continuously on the slurry line. Water or oil cooling keeps the coil temperature stable so field strength stays consistent, and piped and tank designs adapt to existing slurry lines. Wet units are configured to your slurry, so we do not print a catalogue figure; a datasheet is issued with the quotation. Where the feed is kaolin or feldspar, see kaolin and feldspar iron removal. PTMS also supplies the SHMP and STPP dispersants used on kaolin and ceramic slurry, which help liberate iron so the magnet can capture it; they do not replace the separator.

Dry powder stage: dry electromagnetic separator

Ceramic dry powder and dried raw materials such as quartz and feldspar are cleaned on dry electromagnetic separators, which also catch weakly magnetic oxides and scale-like corrosion contaminants. The current models are PT3A160, PT20A600, PT25A600 and PT1000; the PT20A600 is published at 2.5 T, 20 kW maximum coil power, water and oil double cooling, 600 mm magnetic cavity and 2–4 t/h, and datasheets for the other models are issued on request. See the dry model guide.

Permanent-magnet iron removers (custom-made)

For raw-material and glaze lines the permanent-magnet range includes the JPX-CCY series (glaze and raw-material iron removal) and the CBJ series (magnetic rod-group iron removers for slurry lines). These are custom-made to the project, so they have no fixed catalogue figures, and a datasheet per project is issued on request. Permanent units draw no power; see permanent magnetic separator models.

What to send

What you are cleaning (glaze, body slurry, frit or dry powder), solids content for slurry, particle size, hourly throughput, current iron content and the defect you see, and your destination port or country. Send 2–5 kg of the material for the free sample test; the report is issued within 5 days.

Next step: send us your material details (or WhatsApp +86 139 2990 7491) and we reply with a matched model and a quotation. Our FAQ states that a test on a sample of your material comes first, and that no iron-reduction figure is quoted without a test.

Frequently asked questions

What is a ceramic magnetic separator used for?

It removes iron from ceramic glaze, body slurry, frit and dry raw materials before firing, which prevents black iron specks on the finished surface and raises first-quality yield.

Which separator do I use for ceramic glaze and body slurry?

A wet electromagnetic slurry separator, which runs continuously on the slurry line with water or oil cooling. It is configured to your slurry and a datasheet is issued with the quotation.

Which models do you offer for ceramic dry powder?

The dry electromagnetic models PT3A160, PT20A600, PT25A600 and PT1000. The PT20A600 is published at 2.5 T, 20 kW maximum coil power, water and oil double cooling, 600 mm magnetic cavity and 2–4 t/h; datasheets for the other models are issued on request.

Are the JPX-CCY and CBJ series standard models?

They are custom-made permanent magnetic iron removers for glaze, raw-material and slurry lines, so they have no fixed catalogue figures. A datasheet per project is issued on request.

Can I test my glaze or slurry before ordering?

Yes. Send 2–5 kg of your material; we run it and issue a test report within 5 days showing the iron removed. No numbers are quoted without a test.

What is the difference between a ceramic magnetic separator and a dry magnetic separator?

A ceramic magnetic separator usually means the wet electromagnetic unit on glaze and body slurry. A dry magnetic separator (PT3A160, PT20A600, PT25A600, PT1000) cleans ceramic dry powder and dried raw materials such as quartz and feldspar without water.

Can one ceramic plant use both wet and dry separators?

Yes. Slurry lines use wet electromagnetic separators; dry powder and granule lines use dry electromagnetic or permanent belt/drum magnets. We map both from your process sketch and sample.
